Spartanburg teen dies; but twins in womb survive crash

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 19-year-old woman pregnant with twins died after crashing her van in Spartanburg, but doctors were able to save her babies.

The Spartanburg County coroner's office told local media outlets that Ashton Hughes died in surgery Tuesday, just hours after the crash outside Mary Black Memorial Hospital. She had just been to the doctor.

Troopers say Hughes' van ran into the back of an SUV. The crash remains under investigation.

Authorities say the twins survived and were delivered and are being treated at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Investigators say Hughes had an 11-month-old child in her van who was not injured in the crash.
