Summerville duo arrested, suspected of Mass. slaying

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two people from Summerville who were arrested on drug charges this week are suspects in a double homicide in Massachusetts.

According to a police report from North Charleston, the Massachusetts State Police Department asked local officers to talk to 32-year-old Anthony Rivera because he was a person of interest in a double homicide in Massachusetts.

Investigators there said they had phone records showing Rivera talked to one of {}the victims before the killings, the report states.

When local officers talked Tuesday to Rivera and 27-year-old Crystal Mergenthaler, officers said the couple had inconsistent stories. Officers executed a search warrant and found crack cocaine at their Copley Circle home, the report states.

Mergenthaler was charged with trafficking heroin and possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine. She was taken to the Dorchester County jail, but has since been released on bond, according to the jail.

Massachusetts police told North Charleston officers that Rivera was wanted on a burglary charge.
