Transgender woman beaten unconscious downtown, CPD investigating

***UPDATE: Charleston Police stated on Aug. 28 that the assault was a result of the woman's gender identity.***

Charleston Police are investigating an assault that put one person in the hospital outside a busy downtown area.

Police say they were flagged down around 2 a.m. on August 19 to Deco Nightclub on Ann Street in reference to an injured person.

Police say they found the victim, a transgender woman, lying on the ground face down and unresponsive.

The victim's sister and witness told police they saw the attack and described the suspect as a black male wearing a polo shirt.

The victim's sister says the victim was assaulted as she got off the elevator to a parking garage after a verbal disturbance upstairs in the parking garage.

Witnesses say the suspect punched the victim on the left side of her head, according to the police report.

The victim's sister told police she was also kicked by the suspect when she went to defend the victim. The suspect fled the scene.

The victim regained consciousness when police arrived and she was taken to MUSC.

Charleston Police say she was not assaulted because she's transgender and are still investigating.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the victim here.
