Children dead after North Charleston stabbing identified

Raashid White (North Charleston Police)

The Charleston County Coroner's Office has released the identities of two children who died after being stabbed in North Charleston Monday.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said 8-year-old Avery Martin and his brother, 2-year-old Aiyden Martin, both died later at MUSC from "sharp force injuries."

Both of their deaths have been ruled a homicide. Raashid White was arrested shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday off S. Antler Drive in North Charleston in connection to the children's deaths.

North Charleston Police assisted Charleston County Sheriff's Office deputies in arresting White. According to incident reports from NCPD, White resisted arrest, and had to be tazed, but seemed unaffected by the stun gun's shock. It eventually took four officers and deputies to restrain White and place him in handcuffs.

Officers were first dispatched to the Jamison Park apartments off Greenridge Road shortly after 3 p.m. Monday in reference to a complaint about a person with "mental issues" barricading himself inside a residence with two children. A woman told police White forced her out of the apartment, and locked the door.

According to charge affidavits provided by the North Charleston Police Department, White leaped from a second-story balcony when police arrived. Officers then found the children inside suffering from multiple stab wounds. One child died at the scene, and the other later died at a local hospital.

Family members identified White as the suspect, police say. White has been charged with two counts of murder. He waived his right to a bond hearing on Tuesday.
