PD: Shooting leaves one dead in North Charleston

Update (7/21/19):On Sunday evening, North Charleston Police learned that the victim identified as a transgender female named Denali Berries Stuckey. Officials said the investigation is ongoing.

A homicide investigation is underway in North Charleston.

According to North Charleston Police, around 4:05 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to 2721 Carner Avenue after learning of a body laying off the roadway.

At the scene, officers said they found the victim with a gunshot wound. Authorities added that the victim was dead at the scene.

Deputy Coroner Kimberly Rhoton had identified the victim as 29-year-old Derrick Stuckey of Charleston, but the Alliance For Full Acceptance (AFFA) and the Human Rights Campaign identified her as a transgender woman named Denali Berries Stuckey.

ABC News 4 asked if police were investigating the incident as a possible hate crime. They responded that it was being investigated as a homicide.

No arrests have been made at this time.
