Man charged for latest West Ashley Greenway assault

Charleston Police say they've arrested and charged a man with assaulting a woman who was jogging on the West Ashley Greenway March 11.

Tranel Maurice Wright, 34, of Charleston, is charged with third degree assault and battery. Wright was arrested Friday, and is in jail at the Charleston County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

The assault occurred about 6:30 p.m. March 11 on the Greenway between Canterbury Road and Markfield Drive in West Ashley, according to Charleston Police.

The victim reported she waved and smiled at the man as she normally would anyone she passes; however, the victim said the suspect didn't respond kindly.

According to the victim, the suspect said "what the f*** are you looking at," jumped off his bicycle, tackled her, then repeatedly punched her.

When she began screaming at him, the victim reported the suspect suddenly jumped up and drove away on his bike.

Police say the victim had multiple lacerations to her head, neck, and right ear, but say she declined treatment by EMS.

Jail records show Writght has five prior arrests in Charleston County, including one for assault.
