North Charleston Police say a murder-suicide took place in North Charleston Tuesday after a man shot and killed a female in a home then shot himself after a police chase.

The woman was shot and killed in an apparent homicide inside a home on 5000 block of Rock Creek Court., according Paul Brouthers, Dorchester County Coroner.

"The female victim located inside of the residence died as a result of the altercation between her and the male suspect. Both were acquaintances and this incident is being investigated as a murder/suicide," said NCPD spokesman Spencer Pryor.

Charleston County dispatch said they received a domestic disturbance shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday at the location.

North Charleston police officers saw a man driving away from the scene at a high speed, and chased him down Ashley Phosphate, according to Pryor.

The chase ended when the man crashed near Southrail Road and Palmetto Commerce Parkway on Ashley Phosphate at the railroad crossing, Pryor says.

When officers approached the man's vehicle, they found him dead inside from an apparently self inflicted gunshot wound, Pryor says.

There was an active police presence at both the Rock Creek Court scene and the Ashley Phosphate Road location throughout the evening. Charleston County EMS were dispatched as well, and other law enforcement agencies, including SLED crime scene crews, are assisting with the investigation.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the car accident.

Traffic in the area of Ashley Phosphate Road was rerouted as multiple lanes were closed.
