A suspect is in custody following an armed robbery and shoot off with police, according to a lieutenant with the Florence Police Department.

This morning police were called to an armed robbery on Irby street in Florence, according to a media release from police.

The suspect fired at an officer and the officer returned fire but no one was shot, according to police.

The suspect then barricaded himself in a business on Lucas Street, where police say some people in the business were able to escape.

Florence Police's tactical team responded. Florence County Sheriff's Office and S.C. Highway Patrol were also on scene.

The SWAT team entered the business and took the suspect in custody "without incident," according to police.

Harry Lewis lives nearby and said his daughter works at the Family Dollar. He remembered hearing the gunshots.

"I was upset because when I got there they told me to turn around," he said. "I said I'm not going back."

Lt. Mike Brandt with Florence Police was pleased with the response.

"Today, everything worked like we wanted it to work and no one was injured," Brandt said.

Chief Heidler has requested that the State Law Enforcement Division respond to investigate the officer involved shooting in front of 207 W. Lucas Street, according to police.
