Coroner identifies man who died during standoff with police

    NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Police say they found a man lying on the floor of his home with a gunshot wound to his body Friday, hours after he allegedly shot his girlfriend.{}

    Charleston County Sheriff's deputies and North Charleston police officers responded reports of a shooting at Mundy's Mobile Home Park at 4059 West Montague Avenue shortly before 9 a.m.{}

    According to initial reports, a woman either texted or called her brother and told him her boyfriend shot her. Officers arrived and found the woman outside of the mobile home with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. She was taken to MUSC with serious injuries, sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson said.{}

    While on the scene, officers heard at least one gunshot from inside the mobile home, Watson said. The sheriff's office's SWAT team surrounded the home and attempted to negotiate with the man inside. At about 11:25 a.m. the sheriff's office sent its tactical robot into the home.

    It found an unresponsive but breathing man lying on the bedroom floor. A handgun was nearby, Watson said.{}

    The man later died. The coroner's office identified him as 25-year-old Cordell Bennett.
