Waffle House robbery suspect taken into custody after chase, crash and fight with K-9

It was the second time in a week and possibly the very same suspect. That's what people inside the Waffle House on Aviation Avenue are saying.

Officials confirm officers were dispatched at around 2 a.m. to a reported robbery at the restaurant. As they got near the address, they crossed paths with a silver Tahoe believed to be involved.

Following a chase that made its way to Ashley Phosphate, Remount Road and onto Edison Avenue, a suspect was taken into custody. Police say the driver lost control of the Tahoe and it hit a tree. They say the suspect attempted to run, but was captured by police.

An incident report states that during the chase, the suspect was tossing items from the SUV. The report indicates the arrest was also violent as the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Benjamine Louis Gantt, fought with a K-9 officer and resisted arrest. The report states the K-9 "worked his way up" Gantt's arm as he continued to struggle. It also indicates Gantt was tased at least once by an officer on the scene and punched by another.

Gannt was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
