Woman arrested for smuggling tobacco to prisoner in Mt. Pleasant armed robbery, shooting

A woman was arrested Saturday for attempting to smuggle tobacco to an inmate at Lieber Correctional Institution in Columbia.

Shavonna Viola Whiteside was arrested by the South Carolina Department of Corrections Police Services on May 12.

The inmate, Joseph Whiteside, 34, of Awendaw, is serving a 60-year sentence for armed robbery and attempted murder after a robbery and shooting at a Mt. Pleasant McDonald's in 2011.

He is also serving time for another armed robbery from Georgetown County, according to state prison documents.

Thirteen grams of tobacco were concealed in the front of the woman's pants in clear plastic wrap, according to an arrest warrant.

Shavonna Viola Whiteside has been charged with:

• Criminal conspiracy

• Attempting to furnish a prisoner with contraband

Prison documents show Joseph Whiteside had escaped McCormick Correctional Institution in August of 2016 but was captured.
