Citadel raising tuition by 2.5% for 2019-2020 school year

(WCIV)

The Citadel Board of Visitors has announced it will be increasing tuition by 2.5% for to 2019-2020 school year.

The Citadel says the increase is less than the average projected tuition increase of 2.8% in the US next year, according to The Commonfund Higher Education Price Index (HEPI).

The total "all-in-all" costs for cadets can be seen below. The Citadel says Freshman costs are higher because of uniform purchases.

Freshmen:

  • In-state: $30,265 (+ $602)
  • Out-of-state: $53,299 (+ $1,164)

Upper-class:

  • In-state: $25,055 (+ $617)
  • Out-of-state: $48,089 (+ $1,179)

The Citadel says it's "all-in-all" pricing is different from other colleges and universities because it incorporates to costs of room, board, and multiple sets of military uniforms. It says Laundry, dry-cleaning, and books are also included in that rate.

“The Board of Visitors is to be commended for keeping tuition as low as possible without compromising the quality of The Citadel experience,” said Gen. Glenn Walters, USMC, president of The Citadel. “The high number of applicants makes it clear that a Citadel education provides a value that resonates strongly with families across America.”

“The Board of Visitors determined that while a modest tuition increase is necessary, the on-going efforts to control costs and increase efficiency across campus support a raise of 2.5 percent, rather than the higher national projection for all institutions,” said Col. Fred L. Price, Jr., chair, The Citadel Board of Visitors. “We made the decision to set the tuition rates now to give cadets, students and their families more time to plan as they apply for financial assistance or make decisions about what college or graduate college to attend.”

The Board of Visitors also announced a 2.5% increase in tuition increase for the Evening Undergraduate Program. Graduate students will not experience any price increases.
