Sewage leak closes oyster beds across large area of Charleston County

Oysters (File, WCIV)

We're already running out of "R" months in which to get fresh, local oysters, and now a large area of Charleston County's oyster beds are off limits for several weeks thanks to a sewage spill.

The S.C. Dept. of Natural Resources says it has closed all shellfish beds from the Charleston Harbor south to the mouth of the North Edisto River because of a sewer leak in the town of Hollywood.

DHEC water quality testers anticipate the area will remain closed for at least three weeks until bacterial levels in the water return to safe levels, according to DNR.
