1 killed, 4 hospitalized after I-526 wrong way head-on crash Tuesday

North Charleston Police say one person is dead and four others are in serious condition following a wreck that shut down a portion of Interstate 526 overnight Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to police, a vehicle going the wrong way on I-526 eastbound crashed head-on into another vehicle near the Rivers Avenue interchange.

The driver of the vehicle going the wrong way died as a result of the crash, according to police.

Four people in the other involved vehicle were taken to local hospitals in serious condition, NCPD says.

Police say people had made multiple 911 calls about a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes prior to the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
