$2 million grant from DHEC to go toward removing 220,000 tires
A $2 million grant from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control aims to remove them all.
A viral aerial video showed the vast amount of old tires at VIVA tire recycling facility in Moncks Corner.
Alarmed elected officials soon got involved in the cleanup, all the way to the governor of South Carolina.
Gov. Henry McMaster stepped in and asked DHEC in a formal letter to clean up the site.
McMaster wrote that the tires "pose a serious environmental and public health risk" to residents living nearby.
Friday the DHEC announced it had awarded a $2 million grant to Berkeley County to hire a contractor to begin the process of removing the tires.
The department added that it had revoked the waste tire processing permit and imposed a civil penalty of $1,647,372 against VIVA Recycling of South Carolina LLC for repeated violations at its Moncks Corner waste tire processing facility.
Please note that all buildings and trailers in these pictures are also completely full of waste tires.
