DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — A school counselor at Ashley Ridge High School has died after she was hit by an SUV while biking in Summerville, Dorchester County officials say.
Megan Walters Jenkins, 33, died Sunday, September 8, following the collision on U.S. Hwy. 78, the Dorchester County Coroner's Office said Monday.
"The district is tremendously saddened, and offering our condolences and support to the Ashley Ridge family during this time," Dorchester School District 2 spokesperson Pat Raynor said Monday afternoon.
Jenkins was very popular among students and staff at Ashley Ridge, Raynor says.
The school district is making additional grief counseling services available to students and staff as needed during this time of loss, according to Raynor.
According to S.C. Highway Patrol, the wreck happened just after 10 a.m. Sunday on Hwy. 78 near Southern Drive, a few miles outside the town of Dorchester.
An SUV reportedly hit Jenkins' bicycle from behind, causing fatal injuries, the Highway Patrol says.
State troopers charged the SUV driver with driving too fast for conditions. Highway Patrol and the Dorchester County Coroner's Office investigated the wreck.
