'Charleston Basket Brigade' to deliver Thanksgiving meals to 3,500 Lowcountry families

The 11th annual 'Charleston Basket Brigade' was underway Tuesday, with a goal of feeding 3,500 Lowcountry families this Thanksgiving.

The 2018 Basket Brigade non-profit utilized more volunteers than ever to assemble meals to be delivered across the area.

Organizers met with volunteers on Tuesday, Nov. 20 to place a frozen turkey inside each box, along with cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, fresh rolls and a pumpkin pie.

2018 Basket Brigade by the numbers:

  • Over 500 volunteers utilized.
  • More than $800,000 raised in the last 11 years
  • 100 percent of donations used to purchase food.
  • $30 cost to feed a family of 6-10 people.
  • 10–12 lb. frozen turkey inside each box.

Also inside each box is an anonymous letter that reads:

“This comes to you from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else one day.”
