CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Property owners in Charleston County can now pay their 2019 property taxes in installments.
"It was one of the first initiatives I wanted to put in place," said Mary Tinkler, Charleston County Treasurer. "I saw the need. I saw that there was something already in the law that allowed us to do this and I think it’s an important thing to have in Charleston County."
The plan will allows tax payers to pay property taxes in six installments throughout the year, rather than in one lump sum. The payments are based on the prior year's tax bill, with the final installment adjusted for any change in the millage rate throughout the year.
"I don’t ever want it to become an issue of having to buy gifts for your children and then making a tax payment," Tinkler said.
The deadline to enroll for the payment plan is January 15th. The plan is only for 2019 taxes, and anyone interested in enrolling must be up to date on their 2018 taxes. Both residential and commercial properties are eligible.
"As the cost of living locally increases, I want to make sure it’s as easy to pay taxes as possible," Tinkler added. She said 68% of properties in Charleston County qualify for the program.
