Charleston Police say a fire and an elder man's death Thursday morning near Meeting and Romney streets is now a homicide investigation.

Robert White, 82, was found dead inside a home at 5 Addison St. shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, according to the Charleston County Coroner's Office.

An autopsy determined White died from "trauma to his body," and the coroner ruled his death a homicide, Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis said Monday.

The fire was reported shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday, White is believed to have lived alone at the residence, officials say.

The fire spread to one adjacent home, causing minimal damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
