Coroner: Commercial fisherman accidentally drowns in Cooper River

A commercial fisherman died during a crabbing trip over the weekend in the Cooper River near Bushy Park in Berkeley County, authorities say.

The floating body was found Sunday morning by a fisherman.

Van Ho, 37, of North Charleston, died of accidental downing, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.

"Ho was reported overdue from a crabbing trip," Salisbury said.

South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Berkeley County Sheriff Office and the U.S. Coast Guard initiated a search for the fisherman.

A Coast Guard helicopter found Ho's boat in the marsh late Saturday afternoon, Salisbury said.

On Sunday morning a fisherman found a body floating and called the 911 dispatcher.

SCDNR made the recovery and the coroner made positive identification. It was ruled as an accidental drowning.
