Coroner identifies 82-year-old man who died in downtown house fire

Charleston man dies in fire downtown off Meeting Street, Dec. 6 (WCIV)

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office investigated a death related to a house fire near the corner of Meeting and Addison Streets Thursday morning around 7 a.m.

The victim has been identified as Robert White, an 82-year-old black male, according to Charleston County Deputy Coroner Michelle Gonzalez.

The Charleston Fire Department posted about the incident on its Facebook page.

"Emergency crews arrived in less than four minutes from the time of dispatch and reported smoke and fire venting from the one story single-family dwelling. Firefighters advanced into the home and worked to control the fire while simultaneously searching the building. The well-advanced fire was spreading to an adjacent home and crews worked to protect the exposures. Search crews located an unconscious male occupant and rapidly removed him from the home. Charleston County EMS was already on scene and quickly assessed the patient. Unfortunately, the victim did not survive," the department stated.

The Charleston Police Department is investigating.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg was present on the scene as of 8 a.m., and stayed for about half an hour.

A spokesperson for the mayor said afterward “Given the seriousness of the fire, the mayor wanted to support our first responders and get a full update from the chief on the scene.”
