New Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center opens to transform child abuse services in Lowcountry

New Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center House Location (WCIV)

The new Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center at Long Point had its grand opening on Friday.

Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center is the region's leading resource to prevent abuse, protect children and heal families.

"This location will provide a whole spectrum of services," Executive Director and CEO Carole Swiecicki said. "For example forensic services to find out what, if anything, has happened, medical examinations provided by MUSC, mental health assessments, and evidence based therapies for those struggling with emotional problems."

The completion of this new full-service center marks the halfway point in the center’s monumental campaign to transform child abuse services in the Lowcountry.

The campaign began in May of 2017 and is called Above and Beyond: The Campaign to help Children Soar. Proceeds from this campaign funded the construction of the new location in Mount Pleasant and will fund the renovation and expansion of the original headquarters downtown.

Swiecicki said opening this second location will give them the ability to serve twice as many children.

"We have been able to help thousands of families from across our whole region at our center downtown," Swiecicki said, "but we've been at capacity for at least three years."

Swiecicki said only about a third of children east of Cooper were getting their services so they wanted a new location with new services to help more people.

The location of this Center was chosen after extensive strategic analysis by the organization’s leadership.

"A lot of times, people find it hard to believe that child abuse can happen in any family but it happens east of the Cooper," Swiecicki said.

The new location is located at 677 Long Point Rd. in Mount Pleasant.
