Eclipse traffic closes rest areas on I-95, I-26 in South Carolina

Rest areas along I-95 near Santee and I-26 in Orangeburg and Calhoun counties were closed at around 11:30 a.m. due to what the South Carolina Department of Transportation described as "overflow capacity" caused by eclipse traffic.

SCDOT reported interstate traffic volumes were increasing at that time as well. I-85 southbound heading into Greenville and I-77 southbound from Rock Hill are were experiencing heavier traffic.

Drivers are asked by SCDOT to not stop in the roadway or park on the side of the road to view the eclipse.
