Flames shoot through roof of North Charleston building early Friday

Fire erupts at building on O'Hear Avenue in North Charleston (WCIV)

UPDATE: The Red Cross has opened a reception area inside Park Circle Recreation Center for displaced residents. This is where casework will start, according to Red Cross spokesperson Cuthbert Langley. Snacks and water will also be available.

Firefighters responded to a large fire at an apartment building in North Charleston early Friday morning.

Large flames erupted through the top of the building at 4020 O'Hear Avenue around 3:15 a.m.

The fire did major damage to the roof of the building.

The initial call for help was made at 2:58 a.m., according to Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch.

Crews from the North Charleston Fire Department responded.

EMS units also responded.

No one was hurt, according to a tweet from the North Charleston Fire Department.

"Twenty displaced residents are being assisted by Red Cross," according to the tweet.

Fire units remained on scene after sunrise to continue the investigation.
