The highly-anticipated flagship North Charleston Athletic Center broke ground today.

Mayor Keith Summey and City Council hosted a groundbreaking at 11 a.m. at 5800 Casper Padgett Way.

The North Charleston Athletic Center will have three indoor gymnasiums for multi-use, as well as community meeting and event space.

The state-of-the-art facility has been designed to host an array of competitive and recreational sports, including basketball, pickleball, wrestling, volleyball, cheerleading, soccer, among many others.

The 51,000 SF, $14 million facility is slated to be completed by late Fall 2019.

The plan includes:

3 full court basketball floors

4 regulation volleyball courts

6 full size pickle ball courts

6 full size wrestling mats

“The North Charleston Athletic Center will be the flagship of our recreation programming for our residents, granting greater access to a larger number of competitive sports, right in our backyard. At the end of the day, it’s about giving our youth a year-round athletic center to promote teamwork, leadership, and health wellness,” stated North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. “In addition, we anticipate the facility to be an economic driver of sports tourism, attracting regional, statewide, and national tournament play.”
