La Carreta in Summerville passes DHEC inspection, reopens after norovirus reports

La Carreta in Summerville passes DHEC inspection, reopens after norovirus reports (WCIV)

La Carreta Mexican Restaurant in Summerville reopened Saturday, Dec. 15, after a 10-day closure for reported cases of illness related to norovirus.

The restaurant closed voluntarily under DHEC supervision Dec. 5 after several people claimed they'd gotten sick from eating at La Carreta.

According to DHEC, inspectors identified 10 cases of illness among people who said they'd dined at La Carreta in early December.

DHEC believes the illnesses were caused by norovirus, a highly infectious pathogen affecting the stomach and intestines which causes an illness called gastroenteritis.

Primary symptoms of viral gastroenteritis include vomiting and diarrhea.

DHEC gave La Carreta an "A" grade and a 90% score in an inspection Dec. 5.

In its inspection report, the health agency noted violations of cold food storage and hot food holding temperature standards.

A follow-up inspection Dec. 14 yielded an "A" grade and a 100% score from DHEC, with no violations noted.
