Large fire closes Madra Rua Irish Pub in North Charleston indefinitely

Fire crews respond to blaze at Madra Rua Irish Pub on E. Montague Ave. in North Charleston (WCIV)

Smoke was still rising from a well known Irish pub in North Charleston hours after the fire was first reported early Saturday morning.

Crews from the North Charleston Fire Department rushed to Madra Rua Irish Pub just before 4:00 a.m., according to Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch.

A portion of East Montague Avenue was blocked off by North Charleston police as fire crews worked from the ground and the air to put out the fire.

The St. Andrews Fire Department and Charleston County Rescue Squad were also on the scene.

Heavy damage was visible from the front of the business. The exact extent of the damage is still unclear, but the pub says it will be closed until further notice.

EMS was also on scene. No injuries were reported.

Robert Mottinger, the General Manager of a bar around the coroner called The Sparrow, says the loss of Madra Rua is significant one for the neighborhood.

It’s just a major lost, this was the first bar when Park Circle started getting revitalized and coming back around. This was the bar that made that happen, and they have been here for a long time."

A GoFundMe has been created to raise money for the pub. You can click here to learn more.
