Lightning induced fire in Colleton County leaves 2 dogs, 1 cat dead

Officials believe lightning ignited a fire at a mobile home in Colleton County.

The fire sparked on Bells Highway on Monday afternoon.

Neighbors heard thunder and then felt the ground around them shake, officials said.

A passerby noticed the flames and quickly ran to the home. That person was able to rescue one dog. Two other dogs and a cat died in the fire.

Firefighters located the deceased animals after the fire had been extinguished.

The roof was on fire when fire crews arrived, officials confirmed.

The home was destroyed.

Units remained on scene for four hours.
