Several injuries were reported in Colleton County concerning downed trees Thursday night, following severe thunderstorms in the area.

In one instance, a man was entrapped in his truck for over an hour after he accelerated his car and crashed into a downed tree on South Jeffries Boulveard in Walterboro.

He suffered multiple traumatic injuries, according to officials.

A large tree fell across the four lanes blocking the road and knocking out power, said Barry McRoy, director of Colleton County Fire & Rescue.

The Walterboro Police Department had the road blocked yet a pick up truck drove around the police cars and accelerated, McRoy said.

"He hit the tree at a high rate of speed causing heavy damage," McRoy said.

The man was "heavily entrapped," and it took over an hour to free him, McRoy said.

He was transported to the hospital.

SCE&G is actively working on restoring the power lines.

In related weather news, two people were injured and transported to the hospital after a tree fell onto their home in Cottageville Thursday night, McRoy said.
