MUSC pursuing new $325 million hospital

MUSC will soon move forward with building a new 128-bed hospital, as MUSC trustees voted this week to get approval from DHEC.

DHEC must evaluate the need for the new proposed hospital before MUSC can go forward with expansions and creation of new facilities.

MUSC officials said Friday in a press release that costs for the new hospital are estimated to be $325 million.

The Medical University's board also approved the hospital system spending $10 million for the land needed for the new hospital.

But, MUSC officials have not said where they intend to build the hospital if DHEC approves, except that it will be in the Tri-county area.

"By adding another hospital to the MUSC Health system, we will establish a natural, complementary component to our (...) hospital facility on the peninsula," said MUSC President David J. Cole, M.D., said in a press release.

MUSC officials say the hospital system's board also approved this week:

  • $28 million to purchase land and build a Consolidated Service Center, including a sterile processing facility, in the North Charleston area (...) to support the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and the MUSC pediatric ambulatory campus in North Charleston.
  • $16.4 million for leaseholder improvements for the West Ashley musculoskeletal institute.
