New Lidl grocery store in Goose Creek jam packed for grand opening

Lidl Grand Opening (WCIV)

Get ready to shop. There's a new low-cost grocery store in town.

Lidl opened this morning on St. James Avenue in Goose Creek.

It's more than just a grocery store. From produce to appliances to baked good Lidl seems to have it all --- and for less.

Lidl spokesperson Chandler Ebeier says this is the tenth location in South Carolina. Ebeier bragged Thursday that Lowcounty shoppers can expect savings at the grocery store even if they don't necessarily shop at Lidl.

"We like to call that the Lidl effect," said Ebeier. "Not only are we offering really low prices in our stores, but we've noticed that all of the areas that were entering, we've noticed drops in pricing from other retailers."

Ebeier claims that low prices at Lidl don't mean low quality.

"We are 90 percent a private label so with that we're really able to control the quality and price of products," said Ebeier.

Kathy Klochaoff says the store is just what Goose Creek needed.

"There needs to be some kind of competition put up to the standard supermarket chain in this country. Lidl makes a good competitive strike at that," said Klochaoff.

But she says she'll be back when it's a little less busy, as Thursday's grand opening saw large crowds, with some shoppers having to spend several minutes just waiting to get into the parking lot.

"I would shop, but the lines at the checkout? Forget it," said Klochaoff.

Lidl's hours are 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Sunday. The German based company opened their first store in the United States in June.
