Mount Pleasant's only BI-LO grocery store location is closing.

A spokesman for Southeastern Grocers, which owns BI-LO, Winn-Dixie and other grocery store chains, announced the closure Thursday.

The Mount Pleasant BI-LO, located at U.S. Hwy. 17 and the Isle of Palms Connector, is expected to close on or before March 25, the company says.

The store has been under-performing, Southeastern Grocers spokesman Joe Caldwell said in a news release.

"The successful execution of our strategy will at times require us to make difficult decisions that may impact some of our associates," Caldwell wrote. "We are committed to ensuring all associates are treated with the dignity, respect and compassion they deserve. They were the first to know of this decision and have our dedicated support during this transition."

Caldwell later confirmed a total of 10 under-performing Southeastern Grocers franchises (9 BI-LO, 1 Harvey's) in South Carolina are closing.

The U.S. 17-IOP Connector location will be the seventh BI-LO in the Charleston area to close since 2016, including all three East Cooper locations.

Southeastern Grocers closed the BI-LO on Meeting Street in Charleston in October 2016.

In January 2017, the BI-LO on Ben Sawyer Boulevard in Mount Pleasant closed.

Then in March 2018, Southeastern Grocers announced it was closing four BI-LO locations in Mount Pleasant, Summerville, Ladson and North Charleston.

There are currently 12 other BI-LO stores operating in the greater Charleston area, including two each in Summerville and West Ashley, and individual stores in James Island, Johns Island, Hanahan, Goose Creek, Moncks Corner, St. George, Walterboro and Edisto Beach.
