Help was just a phone call away for a pelican in distress near Folly Beach on Tuesday.

The bird was seen struggling in shallow water around 6:30 p.m.

That's when Pet Helpers President Carol Linville made her way to the sand.

Linville, 74, was seen on video picking up the bird and carrying it to a safe location.

Pet Helpers is a nonprofit rescue and adoption center based on nearby Folly Road.

Leaders say the pelican appeared to be suffering from severe exhaustion. They planned to care for it overnight and to transport it to a veterinarian for a more thorough exam on Wednesday.
