Police charge motorist in fatal accident of bicyclist

The driver involved in a fatal accident of a bicyclist has been charged with felony DUI and reckless homicide.

Da’Quan Eady, of North Charleston, was placed under arrest and lodged at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

Authorities say Monday, Nov 5, a Buick sedan was traveling southbound on US-17 near Hagood Avenue in downtown Charleston when it struck a bicyclist who was attempting to cross US-17. The bicyclist died as a result of the collision.

The southbound section of US-17 between Courtenay Drive and Lockwood Drive was closed for several hours while investigators collected evidence.

According to police, this fatal collision marks the 14th traffic fatality in the City of Charleston in 2018. In 2017, there were 17 public roadway traffic fatalities which resulted in the deaths of 18 individuals.

The investigation into this collision is ongoing.

The identity of the bicyclist will be released by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.
