Proposed SC bill would increase cigarette tax to pay for teacher raises

COLUMBIA, SC (WCIV) - A South Carolina bill introduced Thursday in the statehouse would increase cigarette taxes by 5 cents per cigarette to pay for public school teacher pay raises.

The bill was referred to Committee on Ways and Means.

The additional tax would be credited to the South Carolina Department of Education "to be used for equal pay raises for all K-12 public school teachers."

House Bill 3665 is sponsored by Joseph Jefferson (D)-Berkeley County, Lonnie Hosey (D)-Barnwell, Mark Willis, (R) - Greenville, Wendy Brawley (D)-Richland, Leon Howard (D)-Richland, Robert Williams (D)-Darlington.
