On Sunday, the South Carolina Department of Transportation was expected to begin constructing flood barriers along U.S. 378 in the Pee Dee region.

In recent days, Hurricane turned Tropical Storm Florence has battered the Carolinas and so far led to about a dozen deaths.

In a news release issued Sunday, SCDOT cautioned that Florence floodwaters would likely "overtop" bridges by Tuesday without protective barriers at the following locations:

  • U.S. 378 at Lynches River, approximately 2 miles east of Lake City
  • U.S. 378 interchange at U.S. 501 Bypass in Conway

SCDOT expects the barriers to be completed by Monday evening. While the barriers are in place, SCDOT is urging drivers to expect delays and alternate traffic patterns.
