Spanish naval ship docked in Charleston Harbor

Spanish Navy training ship, Juan Sebastián de Elcano (WCIV)

The Spanish Navy sailing ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano docked in the Port of Charleston Wednesday ahead of it homeward voyage to Spain.

The ship, a four-mast brig schooner, and its 170-person crew and 64 passengers have been on a training mission. It got underway in Portugal and visited Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru before sailing to Charleston.

In its 90 years of service, the Juan Sebastián de Elcano has visited the city of Charleston on four occasions. The first visit was in 1934 and the last time was in 1985, according to the Spanish officials.
