Strawless Summer is back for a second year, changing straw culture in the Lowcountry

The Charleston Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and the US Bartender’s Guild is launching Strawless Summer for the second year in a row.

The campaign is encouraging restaurants across the Lowcountry to give straws only when asked for, and to empower consumers to skip the straws while dining out.

The Foundation and Guild says last year’s Strawless Summer campaign had more than 115 restaurants and bars take part, this year the goal is to double the amount taking the pledge, and encourage consumers to jump on board as well.

“In Charleston alone, we use more than 630-thousand straws per day!” commented Kate Dittloff, Rise Above Plastics Coordinator, Charleston Surfrider, “What people don’t realize is that every single use plastic straw ever created is somewhere on this planet in some way, shape or form because straws can’t be recycled.”

This year’s campaign will run Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day Weekend.
