SWAT called to North Charleston campground after report of shot fired
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) —
What started out as a reported assault at a North Charleston campground quickly escalated to a situation involving upwards of thirty law enforcement vehicles.
Officers were dispatched to KOA Campground off Highway 78 early Thursday morning for a report of an assault, a North Charleston Police Department spokesperson said.
Officers initially intended to assist Charleston County Sheriff's Office deputies with the call. Officers later determined the campground rests in North Charleston jurisdiction.
Police and deputies approached the door of a camper intending to speak with a suspect. Police say they heard a gunshot coming from inside the camper. That's when officials say SWAT responded to the scene.
Officers spent about thirty minutes trying to get occupants to exit the camper. Officials say two men eventually stepped out and were detained.
The scene was cleared just before 5:00 a.m.
