A hearing for the man accused of beating a John’s Island woman and kidnapping her 4-year-old child has been set for Friday, March 16 at 11 a.m.

United States Attorney Beth Drake announced Thursday the details of the hearing, which will be held in downtown Charleston.

Thomas Lawton Evans Jr., 37, is currently charged in federal court with three counts: kidnapping involving a person under the age of 18, transportation of a minor to engage in sexual activity and aggravated sexual abuse of a person under the age of twelve.

Each of the charges are punishable by a maximum life sentence. Evans also faces several charges in state court.

“The charges are the result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and Charleston Police Department,” Drake stated.
