Tree down blocks I-526 East through Daniel Island

(File/WCIV)

Highway safety officials say a tree fell on Interstate 526 Thursday, blocking one eastbound lane on Daniel Island.

The downed tree is among the latest local impacts from Tropical Storm Michael.

The incident happened near the Clements Ferry Road exit around mile-marker 24. One lane was blocked for about half an hour, officials say.

The debris was cleared and lanes reopened by 8 a.m.

The situation caused backups on I-526 for drivers coming toward Mount Pleasant.

There continue to be multiple other reports of trees down around the Lowcountry, according to Highway Patrol and other public safety officials.

High winds look to be the greatest threat to the Lowcountry from Tropical Storm Michael as it moves across South Carolina, so downed trees and power lines will continue to be an issue until Michael clears out late Thursday.

Wind gusts of 55 mph have been reported on James Island, and 57 mph on Folly Beach.
