Coast Guard Charleston finds deceased body on Sullivan's Island
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) —
Search teams with the Coast Guard and local law enforcement were patrolling the Charleston Harbor after receiving distress calls early Wednesday morning.
Coast Guard Charleston officials said a beachgoer on Sullivan's Island near Station 10 found the body of a deceased person shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, hours after the USCG received reports someone was screaming for help in the Charleston Harbor near the "Castle Pinckney" site.
USCG spokesman Lt. James Zorn says the Coast Guard doesn't know at this time if the dead person was the one making the distress call.
Crews were sent to investigate around 4:30 a.m. after multiple people at the Charleston Harbor Marina reportedly heard someone screaming for help in the harbor, Zorn says. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and a U.S. Coast Guard boat were dispatched to Castle Pinckney, but did not immediately locate anyone.
Sullivan's Island town administrator says the coroner removed the body at approximately 10 a.m.
A cross has been erected on the sandbar at Castle Pinckney.
