Utility worker transported to hospital after falling into pit in West Ashley

Shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Charleston County Dispatch Center received a call regarding a utility worker who had fallen into an underground pit near Brookwood Circle, according to the Charleston Fire Department.

"Emergency personnel arrived to find a utility worker who had fallen from a ladder to the bottom of a valve pit. First responders assessed the situation and the confined space environment, made contact with the worker and determined the best course of action for rescue. A tripod system was used to safely raise the injured worker from the pit. The worker was treated and transported by Charleston County EMS," according to the fire department.

Emergency response from multiple agencies and a rapid assessment of the situation resulted in a successful rescue.

Charleston and Saint Andrews Fire Departments, Charleston County EMS, Charleston PD, and Charleston County Rescue were dispatched to the below-grade rescue.
