COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – One woman has been charged after deputies say she left a child in a car while she got a manicure, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Dougrica Lewis is now charged with unlawful conduct towards a child, according to deputies.

The department says deputies were sent to the 800 block of St. Andrews Rd. around 11:25 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 on a report of a child being left unattended in a car.

One deputy saw the child sitting inside the car by himself with the windows cracked on the driver’s side only when they approached the car. The outside temperature at the time of the incident was around 80 degrees and the child was inside sweating, according to the department.

Deputies reached through the cracked window, unlocked the car door and removed the child from the back seat. Deputies then went inside the salon and approached the only woman getting a manicure in the salon, later identified as Lewis, about the child.

Lewis then said she had done nothing wrong by leaving her 3-year-old son in the car because she could see him from inside the salon. She said she had to leave her toddler inside of the car because the nail salon had a policy that prohibited children under the age of 10.

Lewis was then taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and has since bonded out. The toddler was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
