VIDEO: Rep. Mark Sanford proposes bill to stop offshore drilling off East Coast
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) —
Congressman Mark Sanford has filed a bill in response to President Trump's executive order allowing for the expansion of testing for offshore oil in the Arctic and Atlantic oceans.
The bill is called the Coastal Economies Protection Act. It would suspend drilling and testing for oil off the east coast for the next ten years.
Sanford (R, South Carolina) has been a vocal opponent of offshore drilling on the east coast. He says offshore oil wells pose too much of a risk to South Carolina’s $13 billion annual tourism industry.
“Purely from a numbers standpoint, the decision doesn't add up," Sanford said.
Sanford details his reasoning more in the video above.
