Former Charleston Southern head football coach Jamey Chadwell has been named interim head coach at Coastal Carolina.

Chadwell was hand picked by Chanticleers' head coach Joe Moglia, who announced Friday he is taking a medical sabbatical for the next five months because of a severe asthma-like condition caused by allergies.

Moglia told WPDE he will return after the season to continue his career as Coastal Carolina head coach. Hear more from Moglia in the video above.

Chadwell was hired as Coastal's offensive coordinator in January, in what sources described to Sports4 as a "head coach in-waiting" hire by the 67-year-old Moglia.

The shakeup comes as the Chanticleers begin their first season of play in the top level of NCAA college football, moving up this year from the FCS ranks to the FBS division.

Chadwell's record at Charleston Southern was 35-14, and he was named the Big South Conference coach of the year three of four seasons at CSU. He was also 10-1 in Big South Conference play in 2015 and 2016, and the team won the conference title in both of those seasons.
