Special teams and defense were the difference Friday night, as Goose Creek scored more points than it had all year to beat West Ashley, 31-16, for the team’s first victory of the year.

After a back-and-forth 1st quarter, the Gators (1-3) rattled off three unanswered scores in the second quarter to take the lead for good. All of the Gators’ decisive second quarter points came from special teams and defensive scores.


Brandon Taylor had a 66-yard kickoff return for a TD, Blake Ellington had a 36-yard field goal, and Julian Lawerence returned an interception for a TD to seal the win for Goose Creek before.

In the second half, the Gators would only give up 3 points as they held on for the win, holding the Wildcats to a 28-yard Sam Story field goal after a 17-play, 53-yard drive.

Goose Creek had TD runs of 20 yards and 5 yards Dante Smith and Tavion Major in the first quarter.

West Ashley (2-2) got TD runs of 11 and 5 yards from Yaphett Bienvenu and Kenyatta Jenkins, respectively, to account for their first half scoring.

Myles Jenkins also had a 73-yard kickoff return for West Ashley.

Goose Creek hosts Ashley Ridge in the next Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week, Sept. 29.
