WATCH: Gov. McMaster says I-526 bridge closure impacts will last more than a "couple days"

Gov. Henry McMaster updates the Lowcountry on the situation with the I-526 westbound bridge closure (WCIV)

With traffic snarled around the Charleston area because of a bridge closure on Interstate 526, state officials gave new insight into the impacts of the closure after attending a local civic group's monthly meeting Wednesday.

Christy Hall, director of the S.C. Dept. of Transportation, and Gov. Henry McMaster and several other state and local leaders addressed the bridge closure after attending the Mount Pleasant Rotary Club meeting Wednesday.

Hall and McMaster answered questions about the closure of the James B. Edwards Bridge over the Wando River, saying the process of repairing the bridge and the traffic impacts "won't be over in a matter of a couple days."

Hall and other DOT authorities are expected also to provide a full update on the bridge closure situation at a 4:30 p.m. news conference in North Charleston Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

DOT closed the bridge Monday after discovering one of the 92 support cables in the bridge's structure had broken. The bridge is closed as DOT engineers assess the damage and evaluate plans for repairs.
